At BYCU, we have five pillars representing distinct areas of focus. Each pillar is tackled independently in the form of dedicated Working Groups and initiatives.

The Five Pillars of the Bermuda Youth Civic Union

Pillar 1: Policy and Research

This pillar is focused on nurturing academic reports, positions and papers tackling different political issues across Bermuda and the world. The underlying objective is to contribute youth perspectives to political academia in Bermuda. This pillar includes:

  • Publishing position papers

  • Surveying young Bermudians

  • Researching local issues

  • Fact-checking government claims

  • Developing comprehensive reports

Pillar 2: Public Advocacy

This pillar is focused on amplifying the voices of young Bermudians beyond academic circles and within explicitly political territories such as media and government. This pillar includes:

  • Newspaper opinion articles

  • Social media campaigns

  • Public debates

  • Podcasts and radio interviews

  • Educational videos

  • Public forums

  • Petitioning

  • Panel discussions

Pillar 3: Civic Engagement

This pillar is focused on connecting with different advocacy and political organizations across Bermuda to spread awareness and cooperation between youth-focused groups. This pillar includes:

  • Partnerships with Youth Parliament and other local advocacy organizations

  • School workshops

  • Interschool outreach and connectivity

  • Political education, discussions and awareness

Pillar 4: Community Action

This pillar is focused on empowering youth to play a more active and pivotal role in directly uplifting and reshaping the Bermuda community through service and local aid. This pillar includes:

  • Beach cleanups

  • Food drives

  • Tutoring

  • Volunteering with charities

  • Fundraisers

Pillar 5: Political Accountability

This pillar represents where the BYCU directly intersects with Bermudian politics. The focus of this pillar is to establish a direct communicative link between elected officials and the BYCU. This pillar includes:

  • Attending parliamentary sessions 

  • Attending town halls

  • Meeting with MPs

  • Tracking campaign promises

  • Interviewing ministers
